He also comes from a military family as "his father and grandfathers both served, and his uncle was a Marine." ![]() Powers has said that the novel took him about four years to write. He holds an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Michener Fellow in Poetry. After his honorable discharge, Powers enrolled in Virginia Commonwealth University, where he graduated in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in English. Much of the novel draws upon Powers's experience serving a year as a machine gunner in Mosul and Tal Afar, Iraq, from February 2004 to March 2005 after enlisting in the Army at the age of 17. It was awarded the 2012 The Guardian First Book Award, and the 2013 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. It was one of The New York Times's 100 Most Notable Books of 2012 and a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award. ![]() ![]() The book features wonderful vivid illustrations of Josephine Baker life and career.Īlthough I watched documentaries and at least one biopic movie based on her life, this children's book still taught me a few things I didn't know about the life of this most extraordinary woman (I didn't know for example that during France's occupation in World War II, Baker had volunteered with the Red Cross and later on worked for the French Resistance, at times smuggling messages hidden in her sheet music and even in her underwear). Written in free verse, The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker by Patricia Hruby Powell and illustrated by Christian Robinson is a beautiful little book and a great introduction to the life of the indomitable and glamorous African American-French dancer.
